Graphic Art Print

These are A3 graphic design prints created for an exhibition celebrating Leeds' rich history, much of which is not commonly known. A key challenge was to identify and explore particular aspects of Leeds' history that could be brought to life through graphic design. History was used as a conceptual foundation for exciting visual ideas, which remain ambiguous until the accompanying text is read.

These two prints tell the story of the Industrial Revolution in Leeds. The purple print on the left depicts the first successful steam train built in Leeds to carry coal, capturing the appearance of steam as tiny particles gather and rise. The dark purple color of the coal and the transparent movement upwards create a mysterious atmosphere of birth. The blue print on the right is from the Middleton Railway, the oldest railway in the world still operating in Leeds, showing a train at work during the day. The spreading fine lines represent its longevity and continuing influence since 1758. Both prints harmonise the Salamanca and Middleton Railway, inviting the viewer to appreciate their pivotal role in Leeds' Industrial Revolution.
